Though the design of Ferrari’s early models were the work of Vignale, a keen desire to work together brought the companies of Enzo Ferrari and Battista ‘Pinin’ Farina into a collaborative relationship in the 1950s that has lasted till today. So close is the relationship that on the occasion of Pininfarina’s 80th anniversary this year, Ferrari has produced its most exclusive model called the SA APERTA.
To be displayed at the Paris International Motor Show, this model will only be produced in 80 copies. While ‘SA’ is said to refer to Sergio and Andrea Pininfarina, it’s also believed to be associated with the Superamerica model and ‘Aperta’ is the Italian word for ‘open’, hence the ‘topless’ design.
The SA APERTA is a true roadster with a profile that arches back from the A-post to two aerodynamic fins integrating the two roll-bars which themselves mimic the outline of the seats. The car is intended to be driven with the top down and has a low-slung windscreen as well as sits lower to the ground than other Ferrari models.
Besides the 670 bhp front-mounted 6.7-litre V12 which embodies the spirit of the 599, the chassis has been redesigned to deliver a standard of stiffness claimed to be comparable to that of a closed berlinetta, with a negligible weight difference.
The SA APERTA has a pricetag of around RM1.41 million but don’t waste your time writing out the cheque since all 80 units are known to already be sold – unless of course one of those buyers wants to pass the booking to you!
